Pride in PRYSM
The Center's youth program, Presence and Respect for Youth in Sexual Minority (PRYSM), was awarded the first major Ohio grant ever given to a lesbian-gay youth project.
In December, the Cleveland Foundation awarded the Center $32,000 to strengthen its on-site and outreach efforts on behalf of sexual minority adolescents.
PRYSM participants, founders, advisors, outreach committee members and supporting agencies have all played a role in making this recognition possible. Our deepest thanks.
The Northern Ohio Coalition (NOCI) deserves particular mention for supporting the program through their annual gifts long before mainstream foundations began to examine the needs of this population.
Our donors and members are also to be thanked for responding so positively to work in this area--and, particularly, in response to our holiday PRYSM appeal which has netted $2,000.
All these funds will go to a greater PRYSM agenda this year: increasing publicity for our Saturday support group, more self-help and professional materials (posters, pamphlets, comic books, journals), professional workshops at agencies and events, and two city-wide conferences--for youth-serving professionals and for youth themselves.
Volunteers are greatly needed to make many of these efforts successful. If you would like to play a part in the self-acceptance, health and future of our next generation, please come for a volunteer intake any Saturday from 11 am-1 pm, or call 5221999 to set up an alternative time.
Lesbians on the Line
Between 30-40 women call the LesbianGay Hotline every month in need of support and referral, yet for some time now, we have not had women on the Line to help them.
If you're willing to give four hours in the evening or afternoon as a Hotline volunteer, it could make a major difference to the many women who call us needing to speak to a woman.
We could even set up a special day
where women could call, always knowing a lesbian or bisexual woman would be available if we got enough women involved.
Hardhatted Women and Men Together
Every Sunday from 10 am-6 pm (and other times, too), the Center continues its march toward our Renovation.
Thanks to all who continue to give "Inner Beauty" their considerable time and skills. We still need an average of 10 more each weekend if we're to see our project completed.
For February--in addition to our regular crew--we particularly need carpet layers and people with tall ladders to help us install the new drop ceilings.
This is Living!
Thanks to all who made holidays at the Living Room especially festive with gifts of food, decorations, a tree, and good cheer.
Our thanks to Cox Cable for their educational HIV-AIDS programs as well as a $1,000 gift to the Living Room for our pioneering efforts.
Remember every Thursday evening at 7:30 is our parent and sibling group for family members dealing with a relative's HIV. These weekly discussions can make a great difference for families trying to cope in isolation.
Captain, O, Captain
Everyone in the community should fling American Beauties at the feet of Jeannine, Sherry, Ed, Chris and Nancy for their awareness training sessions with the Lakewood police rookies and officers, January 8 and 14.
A spirited and diverse reception best sums up the 90-plus officers who attended the presentations. Some were clearly in support of the community and its works. Others expressed personal intolerance of and professional discomfort around the issues the Maryann Finegan Project volunteers presented.
Lakewood is to be commended for beginning this process wherein local gaylesbian residents, victims, and police department personnel are assured of a growing responsibility around our community's issues. The Lakewood police department is striving for more accountability with a number of its communities; it's good to see these beginning steps with ours.
The Center is located at 1418 W. 29th St. at Detroit Ave. Hotline: 781-6736.
